A Little More Crocheting

Not sure yet, but this might become a blanket when I'm finished with it. This is a little of what I worked on over the weekend while watching the coverage of the G20 protests/riots downtown Toronto on t.v. What a shame that there are people like that out there that can ruin it for everyone else. They should be ashamed of themselves for acting in such a way.

Crochet Experiments

I've been experimenting with some new crochet patterns. Well, they are new to me. I found them in an old book on needlework. Excuse my mistakes. I was watching Hell's Kitchen while I was doing them so not paying close attention!

The one on the bottom left is using a "Pineapple" stitch where you pull it through 9 loops. Takes up a lot of yarn and it is hard to pull through sometimes I found. I doubt I'll be making more of that one. I like the one on the right, but again there are mistakes in it! The one on the top left isn't supposed to be round, but you see I couldn't square it off as I did the wrong number of sections. Oh well!

Thrifty Finds

This past weekend, I hit 3 thrift shops with the wee lad. (He loves to tag along in case he finds a treasure or two also.)

I was excited to find this folding chair. Perfect for here on the boat where we have so little space. We can easily use it indoors or carry it out on deck when the kids are playing.

I really like small red and white print fabric. I've got to run it through the wash yet, but I thought it would look nice as trim on a linen outfit for Eireann.

The plate is one of three that they were selling, but I could only justify buying one. I like having mis-matched plates on our table. One day I'll take a photo of all the different ones we use.

Lastly, the coffee carafe. It is made by Thermos and I love the colour, the shape and everything about it. Now I don't drink coffee or tea, but my dear husband does. I can also see it being used to keep lemonade cold on the table. So there you have it. My finds from this weekend!

Homemade Oreo Cookies

Last night I made homemade oreo cookies with cream cheese icing for a filling. Boy are they ever good - verrrrry sweet though, so be forewarned! You can find the recipe here on Mother Huddle here. (Scroll down.) The recipe makes quite a lot, so I stuck some of them in the freezer. Plus I had leftover filling which I stuck in the freezer also. Not sure how well they'll keep, but we shall see.

Camping

This past weekend, we took the Boler out camping on Georgian Bay. It was such a great time even though it rained on Saturday.

Mom made the curtains for us when we first got the camper several years ago. The upholstery on the cushions was replaced by a previous owner and is still in great condition.
When it rained, puzzles were played and movies were watched.
A rainy day walk...
The next day was beautiful and sunny. Perfect weather for the beach, although the water was very cold!
S'mores. First time we ever had them or made them! I had to look up how they were to be made on the internet! Very good and sweet! And... of course, there was a little time for sampler work.

Old Graveyards

Feel like a little history today? I love to walk through old graveyards and imagine what life was like for these people who lived such a long time ago. When we were visiting my Mom a few weeks back, we took a little 10 minute drive out to Merrickville where there we did a little exploring. The McGuigan Cemetery is one of the oldest burying grounds in Eastern Ontario, so they say. I think it dates back to the late 1700's, early 1800's if I remember correctly. Here are a few pics of it.
The cemetery is up on a hill a short ways from the historic Rideau Canal. The Rideau Canal was built from 1826-1832 by engineer, Colonel John By and many workmen who came from England. (The rocks that were dug out can still be seen in many of the beautiful stone houses along the canal.) The canal was built to connect the St. Lawrence Seaway to Ottawa, the nation's capital, then called Bytown. The forts along the way were to protect Canadians from those scary Americans who were looking to do a little expansion! :) Kingston was the original capital, but since it was on the seaway and right across the water from US soil, the capital was moved to Ottawa as it was a little more protected and remote. (Don't ask... as a student one of my summer jobs was a tour guide in a blockhouse museum along the canal. Told you not to ask. History has always been a favourite of mine!)

Good Morning

Just popping in to say good morning. Nothing new to report. Have had my nose buried in some books lately so haven't been creating much lately.
